Crochet Chevron Blanket Free Pattern

This is my very first pattern, so "bare" with me, and please let me know if you have any questions in the comments! My sister-in-law was having a baby and didn't want to find out the gender, so I crocheted this blanket up until the green stripe and then when we found out it was a boy I spent the entire day adding the green row and finishing the blanket for this cute baby. I just couldn't find a crochet pattern that had stiff points for double crochet, so here it is! FREE! :)

Chevron Crochet Blanket

red heart soft “love” yarn (2 skeins of white, and gray, one skein of green)
hook size i or 5.5mm

abbreviations:
DC - double crochet
Cn - chain
dc2tog - double crochet 2 together

Size can vary depending on your need for this blanket. For baby afghan using red heart “love” yarn, I chained 100 to create the navy and orange blanket, and 125 to create the gray and green blanket, for each peak. in the blanket chain 25.

to make sure this blanket turns out right, there needs to be 11 stitches between each peak and valley. In each peak there are 3 stitches, make sure each time you do the 3 stitches, you are doing them in the middle of the 3 stitches from the previous peak and it will end up straight.

Row 1: Chain 100

Row 2: Skip first 3 chains and do 10 dc (first 3 chains counts as a dc, so there will be 11) then *dc 3 in the next stitch. Then do 11 dc. Skip next two chains. In the next stitch yarn over, put hook in chain and pull yarn through all three loops on your hook.  (I made this stitch up, the Carlie stitch, so hopefully that makes sense! It makes it so the hole isn’t as big in the blanket) Then dc 10 and repeat from * and finish with the last 11 stitches of your row. chain 2

Row 3: turn and skip first stitch then dc in the next. dc2tog once, then do 8 dc in each stitch making sure there are 11 stitches up to the first peak. 3 dc in the next stitch. (3dc should be in the top and middle of the 3 dc from the previous row.) dc 11, skip 2 and then do special (carlie) stitch and dc 11 then repeat from * pattern till the last 11 dc in the row-After you do 3 dc in the same hole dc in the next 8, then dc2tog and end row with two more dc. Chain 2 and turn.

(basically this blanket has dc2tog on either end of the row in the 2nd stitch from edge)

repeat row 3, 4 more times for a total of each color having 7 rows then change color.

border on green and gray blanket is two rounds of double crochet.  in the peaks and valleys do the same thing as the rest of the blanket, skip two in the valleys or add 3 in the peaks.  in the corner, double crochet, chain 2 and double crochet in the same  stitch to make a square corner.

for the square boarder in navy and orange blanket dc around blanket once, then in the corner, chain 3 up to next row- pattern is to do dc, chain 1, skip next stitch, dc, then repeat all the way around, don’t skip a stitch in the valleys and in the peaks do this pattern of “dc, ch1, dc” twice to keep the peaks and valleys going.

pattern is main color, white, main color, white, main color, white, accent color, white, main color

Here's a video showing the pattern repeat to help clarify. The "carlie" stitch is also included in the video :)

  1. Hello can you explain the repeat please ? An dc 2tog 8 more times or 8dc ?

  3. Amber- the repeat is starting from the top of a peak: 3 dc in the same stitch, 11 dc, skip 2, do the weird half half double pull through stitch in the valley, 10 dc up to the 3 dc in same stitch. (so there's 11 total) then again 3dc in the same stitch. Hope that helps. as for the dc2tog, you only do that at the very beginning and the very end of each row once. for example, at the end of the row, in the last 11 stitches, you do 8 dc, then you dc2tog and then dc 2 more. at the beginning you do one dc, then dc2together, and then do 8 more dc up to the peak and start your row with 3 dc in the same stitch.

    1. Hello Carlie, thanks for responding, I did up to (Row 3) dc 11 and then do special (carlie) stitch and dc 11 then repeat from * Is this the repeat ? 3 dc in the next stitch. (3dc should be in the top and middle of the 3 dc from the previous row.) dc 11 and then do special (carlie) stitch and dc 11 .Row repeat is confusing me.

    3. Hello Carlie can you make a video for Row 2 please?

      Delete
    4. Row 2 is the exact same as the video in row three. the only difference is you need to count out the stitches to make sure you have 11 leading up to the peaks and valleys, making sure this is right will make the rest of the blanket a breeze! Hope this helps!

  4. Jennifer- I'd love to help clarify, what makes no sense to you with row 3?

    1. I'd really like to see you correct row 3, there is an error. After the 'carlie' stitch, you should dc in next 10, not 11. to match row 2.

  5. After the parentheses in row 3 it says dc 11 and then do Carlie stitch but it forgets the skip 2, if you don't skip 2 the counts get messed up.

    2. Thanks for this pattern, just working it up/figuring it out now after finding it on Pinterest.

I think I noticed a little mistake as at the end of Row 3 you write:

After you do 3 dc in the same hole dc in the next 8, then dc2tog and end row with two more dc. Chain 2 and turn.

But...in the video you show and say to just do ONE more dc after the dc2tog. I thought I was going wrong from the written pattern as I only had one more stitch to make and thought I had to fit in 2dc, but in the video clarification I see I was right and perhaps the written pattern needs a teeny tweak?

Thanks once again for sharing, I've been looking for ages for a pointy enough chevron pattern!

    3. Morag, how did your blanket turn out? I found the same thing.

For the end of the row is it:
dc 3-in-1, dc 8, dc2tog, dc, ch 2 and turn?
For the beginning of the next row, is it:
      sk 1, dc, dc2tog, dc 8, dc 3-in-1?

When counting to 11 between the peaks: the turn chain at the beginning of the row counts as one stitch and the dc2tog counts as two stitches. Is that right? Please correct me!

  6. Beautiful blanket and simple once you get a couple rows done. Thanks for sharing! Are we allowed to sell our items?

  7. I've been replacing the Carlie Stitch with a HDC because it's easier for me to remember. It doesn't seem to make a difference. Also I find that folding the sides of the valley together helps keep the holes small and hides the skipped stitches better. Thank you for this quick, easy and beautiful pattern. This the fastest I've ever worked up a blanket! I'll definitely be doing this one again in the future.

  8. Does the "carlie" stitch count as one of the 11 stitches after the valley?

  9. I am ending up with than 11 stitches on the very ends (12-13). Am I doing something wrong or is this correct? Thanks

  10. Great pattern! Just wanted to let you know that in the PDF version, you left out the skip 2 DC before your Carlie stitch. I was very confused, bit then I looked here and saw it.

  11. What is size in inches of the grey and green blanket?

  12. Approximately how big is the first blanket? I am trying to make a queen size and don't know how many valleys to make... 15 maybe??

  14. Hi, I have been searching for a pattern such as this all over this. Yours seems to fit what I want the closest. I have been crocheting since I was young and I am a senior. Have never done a shevron youth. I see many question about errors though and I would like to ask if you would let me know where to find the final one you said you fixed. Bless you because as I said, was his the closest pattern to what I am seeking. How will I be able to get the corrected pattern though?

  15. Hi Carlie, what do you mean on row 2 when you say "finish the last 11 stitches?" Do I continue with the repeat until i have no stitches left? If so, I only end up with space for 10 dc after the peak.

  16. Hello, thank you for the pattern Carlie. It's a nice clean and simple chevron pattern, which is sometimes hard to find. I had the same problem with stitch counts being off. I re-worked the pattern with doing only 10 dc after the Carlie stitch each time(like in row 2). This fixed the problem. Hope this helps someone.

  17. I'm excited to make this blanket. Thank you for the pattern. The stitch you call the Charlie stitch is actually a half double crochet (hdc). Just a heads up. Thanks again!

  19. For the square border It says double crochet around once. Does this mean double crochet in every stitch or do the same stitches as the rest of the blanket for the first row. Also how do you handle the corner? Dc,chain 2, Dc?
